Been denied passage because country wants 6-mo left on passport; you have 3 or 4?

I had a brief moment of panic this morning when I remember some agent for one of my flights stating the country I was flying to required our passports be good for six months. I knew my passport was fine, but it dawned on me today - the day of departure for one of the trips in question - that my son's might expire in four months.

As it turned out he's got more than a year on it. I'm curious though, has anyone here been denied entry to a coutry because they had say four months left on their passport instead of a required six, even with a return ticket showing you'll be out of there in five days?
