It's not the surprise. It's simply testing positive and being stranded downroute. Depending on the country concerned, it could be many weeks or even some months before you can get back to the UK (eg if a negative PCR test is then required before you are permitted to depart the country - because PCR tests can come back positive long after you've recovered from Covid).
