Looks like I missed a lot of back and forth yesterday, and yet, I missed nothing at all.

I don't have a taste for Michelin star dining (at least not yet), but I do travel often to shop for luxury goods. There just are things that I can't find between my local Wal-marts, dollar store, and Ross (that is pretty much all there is out here in flyover country). I always go to NYC with an empty suitcase to fill and I still often ship things directly home. Right now, I want to test drive and shop for a luxury car and am having to make trips
out of state because the few luxury car dealers here just carry the low-end models and don't have the cars I am interested in to test drive. And, NYC sales tax is nearly the same as any other city in the US -- 8.875% (compared to 8.81% for shopping in my own hometown).
PHNY is a great location for shopping, like you said, but I'd argue that counts for something. Overall, I think the neighborhood is a little sterile, but when I've stayed at PHNY I can pretty much walk to everything I came to town for (shopping and the arts). But, I am quite relunctant to return based on my own experience with service issues. Even the glowing positive report posted yesterday pointed to service misses.
