Sorry to be snarky but you or your wife would only consider putting headphones on if it were a Delta rule rather than just acting like a reasonable member of a community and providing common courtesy to fellow passengers?
Of course it's rude to listen to anything without headphones in a closed setting like an airplane. I see toddlers on planes who can manage this process.
