United probably did a cognitive psychology analysis, and realized that folks who previously earned status pre-pandemic and then were not granted an extension would be angry longer-term than those who requalified legitimately then felt betrayed that others were given status extensions for free. Objectively looking at the alternatives, despite being a legitimate requalifier myself, I can see the business sense in their decision. Once we have a normal year, things will sort themselves out organically.
