IIRC around the time of the merger, you could swap individual segments on award tickets pretty easily, for example if an award segment at a better time became available for a connection. You could also add the connecting segment that wasn't available at the time you grabbed the long haul award space. I don't think DL used married segment availability for award tickets then either.
