Attaching a photo from an
taken today showing the current status of the closed JW Marriott, as well as a rendering of the final result.
The hotel is undergoing a major gut renovation that will, as stated above, see the overall room count decreased as the first few floors of the building are converted to office space, the ground and mezzanine floors where some of the ballrooms are will be turned into retail space and become anchor stores, and the exterior entirely reclad from the 80s brown panels and gold glass to a cleaner, more contemporary treatment in stone and warm metal. From the floor plans I've seen for the ground and mezzanine floors, the three elevators to the guest rooms will remain for hotel use, but the ground floor lift lobby is the only space on the ground floor allocated for hotel use. This all but confirms that the lobby will be moving upwards in the building, most likely into the top floor with the tall windows.
I heard the project was due for completion in 2022, but with the months-long suspension of construction activities in Kuwait that caused many timelines to slip, I'd realistically see this one coming back online in 2023 based on the current progress.
