SDC doesn’t apply when the first or other segment are operated by other carriers. When the first segment is operated by other carriers, The check in option won’t even show up on UA until you get to HNL. Assuming you’re on a 016 and call UA, you’ll be offered a difference in fare, which you can probably do now.
I do actually want my HA flight, as I have to visit a friend in Kaiser Moanalua in my 5 hour layover in HNL. Fingers crossed they can at least check my bags all the way through to Europe at least. I forgot how pinickity it was doing a HA->UA connection via HNL.
