Itwas a completely different business and traveling culture and environment. I don't think I ever saw people in First Class dressed in shorts and tee shirts back then; jeans and casual shirts maybe but not the beach bum look I frequently see these days.
I think that’s as much of an overall cultural shift as it is an airline specific thing. Even traditional “formal” jobs like lawyers and bankers were abandoning the full suit dress code pre-COVID and I am sure COVID has accelerated it. If people aren’t “dressing up” at work they sure as sh*t aren’t going to dress up to fly on United.
