The air carrier allowed them to check in through online checkin or kiosk, so the carrier doesn't seem to be hung up on having a physical piece of paper or plastic that indicates identity.

I was surprised. I thought the TSA would require a government-issued piece of paper or plastic with a photo except in extreme circumstances.
