Most refundable fares don't even need to be cancelled before departure. Wouldn't matter if you're checked in or not. If you don't board by T-15 or whenever, you're offloaded from the flight and the reservation is probably canceled. But the ticket would still be valid, and refundable. But read the "Penalties" section of the fare rules to be sure there's no penalty for no-shows.
