It does take time for a new variant to work its way down from the active healthy people moving around enough to expose themselves to it, to the more vulnerable that may be more adversely affected.

That said, I certainly hope this turns out to be a COVID watered down to the point of a common cold for both vaccinated and un-vaccinated alike, and that such a strain quickly crowds out everything else.
