I have been a Google Fi customer for years. I cannot access the CapitolOne app nor the online banking page on a computer because it wants to send me an SMS or call me to verify my number. When I enter my Google Fi number, Capital One says that it’s not acceptable because it is a VOIP number. So I am stuck and can’t access my account online. Customer service says that I should just call in when I have questions about transactions or if want to have them read my monthly bill to me. Ridiculous.

My recommendation is:. Sign up for Google Fi and have it sent to a family member or friend for activation. Then have them port the number into Google Voice (to your account, of course). Then get another Google Fi SIM and have it activated and shipped to you for safe keeping. Google Fi can be paused and unpaused at will, and the bill will be prorated to the day.

Those 2 solutions will cover all the bases: Google Voice for the majority of services that work with it, Google Fi when you need a "real" number or a US residential IP address.
