Is AMEX stingy with approvals these days or just me?

I decided to give the 75k AMEX Gold offer another go. I received the same response I have received over the last two attempts in the last 6 months. According to reconsideration line "too many new bank card accounts".

I have opened three cards in the last two years. I am 3/24 with two cards opened earlier this year. Utilization is <1%, I have a car loan I used basically to remove the nag of no installment loans from my Experian, and a credit score of 791 (would probably be higher without the hard pulls from AMEX).

I have seen anecdotes on here of people with many more opened accounts than I have still get approved. Is my GrAAvy train still haunting me? If I go back 36 months I'm at 10/36, but have no idea how far back AMEX looks. I should probably just focus on my Chase UR/Hyatt/Alaska Airlines strategy, but I've really wanted to diversify into AMEX MR.
