It almost would make sense to buy 2 saver fares, because when you want to change the $79 fare it might not be available for that price anymore. Unless you mean book 2 $79 fares.
It is all a gamble either way, if travel plans aren't firm.
If I have to cancel a flight, the funds will be in the wallet. I have never needed to cancel a flight for reasons other than the whole trip being cancelled. I have also never made speculative reservations while being unsure of which flight I could ultimately take. I tend to verify my availability before booking anything.
