Isn't the usual protocol for the airline to put a coach on? Was there no offer at all from BA to assist with onward journey. They're not exactly next door to each other.

A taxi would have just as expensive.
And of course you will have been insured for all eventualities and can leave the argument to them. But I have been in similar situation and BA covered car rental, ferry and taxi from Harwich to Heathrow.
there just are not the staff or indeed the experience to handle disruption anywhere and you need to fend for yourself. Good insurance is critical.
