Another issue I see with the slide of the SF Metro area is the somewhat idyllic and idealized settings that some movies, especially those with Starfleet Command headquartered in San Francisco, show for a future SF that, quite frankly, is really, really hard to see from its current state both in terms of some physical transmogrification as well as shift in the urban environment for living there.
I suspect many outside of central SF really haven't the foggiest how far this city has fallen, especially with the accepted practice of the national media immediately discrediting any kind upheaval that occurs in the area--they've been engaging in this practice for the past decade plus. Now, we're starting to see...er..."something that happens to some people" to such an extent that they can no longer simply ignore it or obfuscate reality with mind numbing euphemisms--en masse looting and pillaging with real time video in Union Square is what it is.
Some of my neighbors--even the more famous and influential ones--are heading to Florida, and perhaps I'll follow suit. Again, I ain't the smartest guy in the room, but I sure know when it's time to leave.
