This is so different from other jurisdictions. When property was stolen from me in a vacation home in Maine (larceny, not robbery), the perpetrator (recidivist offender btw) was caught through meticulous police work. Perp was prosecuted, eventually pled guilty, and sentenced to jail. Restitution was ordered. I received checks for years from the Maine department of corrections reflecting the perp's jailhouse earnings until I was made whole.
