A question (born out of ignorance).

I'd always imagined Hawaii to be the US version of the Costa del Sol, with mai tais replacing sangria and the residents of Podunk, Illinois replacing the chav's. As discerning members of the board seem to love it, I suppose I am wrong. So what is the attraction?
