Transiting Narita with a POSITIVE test
Hi Everyone,
I’m in a bit of a predicament here and hoping someone might have experience with this.
My wife and I are Canadian, we came to Thailand for a 3 week vacation. We tested positive here unfortunately and the trip was cut rather short. We’re in quarantine in Bangkok right now and I’m trying to navigate a clear way back to Canada now.
I have become aware that once we’re released from quarantine in Bangkok and are deemed no longer contagious/infectious by the staff at the quarantine facility, we will both continue to test positive for quite some time. I was honestly unaware of this with Covid but that’s neither here nor there.
As Canadians, we need a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of boarding the plane back home. It seems like it’s gonna be “several weeks to months” before this is a viable option because we will continue to test positive.
It seems that many governments around the world, including the Canadian Government, are aware of this and so they also accept a positive PCR test taken within 14-180 days of departure as means to get back into the country.
I have worked with the Canadian Embassy here in Bangkok and they’ve confirmed that this is indeed the rule and I can re-enter Canada 14 days after originally testing positive but also I’ll also to be released from quarantine as well after the doctors here deem it safe.
I’m looking at flights to get us back home to South Eastern Ontario. There are no direct flights from anywhere in Thailand to anywhere in North America, so we need to transit an airport on the way home. It seems that this will be Tokyo’s Narita airport enroute to Vancouver.
Here's my question; Has anyone had any experience flying through Narita or can anyone speak to an occurrence of being allowed to transit Narita/Japan with only a positive test? I have called Japan Airlines and they’ve told me that the airline itself has no rules around tests and none of its own requirements, so that leaves Canada (for which we should be good) and transit rules in Narita.
Really hoping someone can help.
I have a local Thai sim card and cannot call Narita, I’ve tried. So that isn’t an option unfortunately.
