Just arrived for a free night award here (resort? not a resort?) Check in was nice, got a Globalist welcome. We had booked a basic King room on our free night cert and was upgraded to a basic golf course view room when I checked in with the app, but when we arrived I gently asked the front desk person if there was an upgrade available to a better room. She was almost apologetic that they were completely sold out of standard suites (even though it is a Tuesday night - but, Thanksgiving week so I believe it), but she did offer to give us a balcony overlooking the golf course, which actually is a considerable upgrade over our original room. Moral of the story is: it doesn't hurt to ask for a better upgrade when physically arriving, even if you got a bit of an upgrade for the app checkin.
