I think its a bit of a fight, and personally, I don't have enough time to go through that if I didn't have status. Then again, suggesting what flight you're on might yield a hit from one of the members here.
As an SE I do not need to be travelling on an upgradeable fare. So long as the companion is in the proper fare, I can upgrade him and still travel in the back myself. Not sure if this applies to a P or E.
