I think the OP was saying two independent things. Wants to upgrade his award flights next year with PlusPoints, and if he can, he later says he'll fly those 7 (paid) segments to earn the PPs to apply to said awards next year.

But it's moot. No one has directly said it, PlusPoints from a 1K’s account CANNOT be used for upgrading award tickets. Full stop. (Global Services members can, but that's by invitation only and probably, as someone mentions above, $40,000 in spend, perhaps more--the actual criteria is not published).
