Only you can make that assessment.

For me the answer is a resounding yes but then I am able to use my PlusPoints each year. I have some flexibility for travel dates.

However, many people have their PlusPoints expire unused each year.

I use my PlusPoints for international travel and the ability to purchase economy for a Polaris seat is worth it. Note there are no guarantees and I am actually quite concerned for my ability to use them next year based on the reports of people getting 1K this year who never previously had 1K. I am uncertain if this means there are far fewer 1Ks earned from flying OPM flights. I pay for my own travel. I would not be trying to use PlusPoints for domestic travel and note for many of my international flights only the international legs are upgraded and the domestic flight on the trip are in coach/economy. This is fine with me as it is the ongoing international legs where I want the upgrade.
