Montreal Convention experts - lost engagement ring

Hi all,

Apologies that this is not directly BA related, but I assume the Montreal convention is universal to all airlines and I was flying AA (OW). My wife and I are in rather a pickle with a lost bag and geting any useful info from either AA or the AA forum is proving very difficult.

Mods, I hope you allow this as I know that many of our great BAEC forum members are very well versed in the Montreal convention topics and I have high faith someone here will know how to help and be kind enough to offer their advice.

Long story short:
Flew DFW to MEX on 13th November. Mex is considered our home and this was the return leg.

Bag didn't arrive at MEX. Was informed by station manager at MEX that it was in Dallas. Was given case number to follow up.

Following day purchase essential medicines which were in lost case (kept receipts).

Viewed case online, but no status change for three days.

Eventually get email and call from AA lost baggage team. We need receipts of all items etc to locate it (seems odd - surely a description of the luggage is better). Case number no longer accessible online.

AA now not responding to any messages and unable to get any help filling out their long and complex form.

Contents of luggage: make-up sets, clothes, prescribed skin medicines and......... engagement ring. Is over 10 years old and was worth a mere $400 at the time as times were much tougher. Finding the receipt likely to be incredibly difficult.

Thus, my plea is if there is anyone here who can help us understand our rights under the Montreal Convention. I've surfed some websites and sought help from airline, but really not understanding anything. We do have an AMEX insurance policy but it will only cover up to $500 usd for lost baggage. Right now we are unsure of how to claim for anything above $100, which is at least 2 items in the bag (the ring and one of the medicines) or how to prove the rest of the contents. It seems AA are acting as if it is already lost, rather than being looked for.

I'm sure you can understand the sentimental value attached to the ring. We're actually due to fly to Chicago this December to celebrate. Ironically with AA.

If anyone can help, I'd be eternally grateful.

Thanks in advance.
