Fares offered and underlying pricing

I bought 2 separate expensive Bus class tickets from Europe to Australia via USA on UA, via an agent from the Chase UR travel desk.
One was a paid fare. The price was the same as on United.com, but the UA itinerary showed no miles (also neither PQP nor PQM) earned, so I cancelled the Chase ticket and booked it on UA. Earning 75k UA miles for and associated PQM made it an easy choice.

On the other hand, redeeming Chase points for my wife's ticket saved me over $5000. Looking at the resulting chase itinerary (which doesn't earn miles), the price shows what I paid less the redemption value of the miles. Being naturally curious how it works - I tried to get a receipt from United.com but it never sent anything. I found a different path to request a receipt, and it showed fare class /C1-5 REFUNDABLE and a the same price as Chase quoted/charged. This is not a published fare - does anyone know how it works? How much does Chase save by not giving UA miles on a ticket for example?
