Four Points Buffalo: Updated Review
Never posted a review before, and noticed there weren't any recent reviews of this property, so I thought I'd add my two cents:
Granted, I've only been here a few hours, but I already know I'm checking out in the morning and going elsewhere. Its not a dump similar to the Four Points Austin, but thus far I'd say its only marginally better. Maybe its my room; other reviews didn't seem to indicate much, but I haven't complained yet - its too late in the evening to do so and it will have to wait until tomorrow (I chose to stay at the FP Austin when checking in late rather than mess with finding a new hotel at a late hour, despite an instant feeling of disgustingness upon entering the room.)
This is the most bizarre room I've ever had (and I once received a Murphy bed at the Westin Cincinnati). I reserved a 600 sq ft "suite" that, per the description, was newly renovated. Well, yes, it was newly renovated if by newly one meant 1996.
It is truly 600 sq ft. Problem is that its not really a suite - its just a very, very large room about 25x24 ft. And no, they didn't add any furniture (well, maybe they added the lamp in the corner that's not plugged into anything and 10 ft. from the nearest electrical outlet). It's pretty much the standard furniture, though they did throw a couch up against one wall. There's a ton of open space in the middle of the room - if I weren't checking out tomorrow (supposed to spend 4 nights here - 1 will be more than enough) I'd consider building a few shuffleboard courts for entertainment. There's plenty of room. I'll probably just watch some TV - though I'm not sure how well I'll be able to watch a 19" TV from 20' away. The bed is on the opposite wall of the TV and I haven't had my eyes checked in a while.
Well, it may be a weirdly oversized room, but its clean and comfortable, right? No.... it didn't even get that right. Stains all over the carpet, including bright green, unidentified stains. Sagging cushions on the stuffed chairs. A poorly cleaned bathroom (i.e. black dirt marks on the door). Oh - almost forgot about the cigarette ashes found behind the chair.
Though it may need a bit of a cleaning, at least the room is in good shape itself, right? It was recently renovated recently, right? Guess again. Looked at the room service menu - half of it was ripped out, the other half mysteriously stuck together. I chose not to investigate further. Closet? No doors. Not that the closet would do much good anyway - the bar has pulled out of the wall and couldn't hold a small bag of feathers without crashing onto the floor. And despite the room being 600 sq ft, the bathroom is oddly tiny and only a bit bigger than the door-less closet. And of course the light on the desk doesn't work, but it pairs nicely with the lamp in one corner that's not plugged into the wall and couldn't be in the first place seeing there aren't any outlets anywhere near that corner.
Oh - and I left my ethernet cable at my client site. Haven't needed it in the other 2 hotels I've stayed at in Buffalo (Hampton Inn and Doubletree). The FP has graciously offered one to me, but has charged me a $5 deposit on my room bill. I have never seen that charge before! But I suppose it's consistent with the swimming pool liability waiver I had to sign upon check-in; I've never seen that before either.
The upsides to this property? They were reasonably friendly at check-in and did deliver the ethernet cable promptly. The bigger upside is that I need this one last stay to qualify for platinum for next year. Maybe that's why I'm willing to put up with this place for 1 night (but not 4).
We'll see what the mgr says in the morning when I check-out early.
Overall, when in Buffalo, I recommend the Hampton Inn. One of the nicest Hamptons I've ever stayed in (but book ahead - it sells out frequently and then you get stuck at places like the FP). Doubletree was nice but not a great location. Colleagues at the Hyatt are disappointed too. No one has tried the Radisson yet, but I'm thinking just by being unknown its probably the #2 hotel in Buffalo behind the Hampton Inn. (Don't know anything about the Adam's Mark though.) I am very glad I've already booked a room at the Hampton for next week and have kept up my Gold status at Hilton.
