If you book through an ineligible channel you don't earn points at all, even for incidentals.
If booking through a group that is taking care of room and tax, you may still be able to earn points for incidentals depending on the group contract but booking through an OTA will definitely not let you.
If you find a better rate through an OTA, try the price match guarantee so you can earn points.
