I'm a bit hesitant to take my original card with me as I don't want to risk having it damaged. I also have the gogetvax QR code on my phone, but can't get an answer from them about international travel.

FWIW I took the CDC card to a number of countries. It's in a ziplock bag, and with my passport. I use it for border crossings and check in, everything else - some other document.
In any case, in the next few months some CDC cards will be invariably lost, and others used up (as more boosters won't even fit on it - mine is full after 3 vaccinations). So I am sure everywhere we go will start accepting the random printouts that each US state has. Might as well start early.
