Flying over the holidays adds challenges, i.e., there is still a great business flight on BA to Europe for 1800 dollars RT over New Years, as well as some AA South American deals. For example, the 1800 dollar flight skyrockets to $5000+ if I fly the day before or after. If mom croaks, and I need to return home sooner... I know back in the day airlines would give a small discount for a new flight, but would they allow me to change my date without having to pay the $4000 fare difference? I guess I could use the credit towards a one way economy ticket, or would they at least price that ticket as part of an RT?

Should I actually start researching those scammy-feeling travel insurance policies? Do they cover this? We aren't talking a 4th Nephew on my sister's side twice removed, we're talking, actual mother. Just trying to be pro-active.
Given that you can cancel any revenue ticket today without a penalty and that will automatically generate a flight credit, you could self-service if the occasion arises and either use the "change flight" feature (easier but not always doable via the aa.com property) or cancel and apply the automatically generated flight credit towards the new ticket.
