I don't if I just got lucky or what, but I cancelled a flight earlier this year where I had done a seat upgrade to F via the seat map, and some time after I cancelled, a credit appeared in my account refunding the miles. I never made any request, and AFAIK the flight that I had cancelled ended up operating as usual. So YMMV but may be worth checking your account activity.
