On the facts you describe, including holding a receipt showing the ticket was issued by UA at time of purchase, there is no basis for any extra charges. I would call UA again.
The ultimate remedy is a complaint to the Department of Transportation (
Air Travel Complaint Form). It's illegal for an airline to assess additional charges on top of the price displayed on the website and/or after it's already issued a ticket.
Follow up question, you did purchase this ticket from United on its website? Not from an online travel agency?
