No, NW flew LAX-HNL-SYD from June 91 for about a year or two. I was on the inaugural flight. Great deal - $750 rt from MSP and I think double ff miles.
I wonder if it might also have something to do with equipment utilization. It seems to me that QF has two 747s that spend a fair amount of time on the ground at LAX because they can't make a complete roundtrip in a day, and of course QF can't get onward rights in the US. A US carrier could go onward from LAX to somewhere, but is it worth flying a 747 or 777 onward?
CO does fly some of its international 767s domestically as onward flights from EWR.
And doesn't one of NZ's AKL-LAX 747s goes on to London?
