I don't see why it's so hard for people to just follow the rules and stop acting like they are more important than everyone else or that the rules should not apply to them simply because they are inconvenienced. Was the FA little heavy-handed...perhaps. But when you look at it from the FA's POV where most pax ignore safety instructions, blatantly ignore the rules and are referred to by customers as "a group of self-entitled servers with a perpetual inferiority complex" and have been subject to physical assault one begins to understand why they may feel the need to take a more aggressive posture.

You know, the easiest way to avoid this issue with the FA in the first place is to turn your *@%$ phone off. Unless someone is actively dying, whatever it is can wait.
While I agree with most of your sentiment, I do have some issue about your first line. What are the actual "rules"? Is it to inform/notify/direct passengers to put phones into airplane mode, or is it to ENSURE they are in airplane mode? If the former, then nothing more than an announcement is necessary. If the latter, it would be impossible for the airline to comply unless they confiscated every phone during the flight's duration or figured out a way to forcibly put every phone into airplane mode.
