Federal rules are federal rules, whether we like them or not. The rule is that phones need to be in airplane mode...period. While we all think it's silly, it is what it is. If there were ever to be an issue on a flight the only question the FAA would be asking would be "did you follow established policy and procedure?" Demeaning a FA for following the rules says more about you than it does the FA who everyone seems to think is on a power trip for doing their job.
There's a difference between telling everyone to put phone into airplane mode and what FA did. Nowhere in established PP does it state to interrogate each passenger. Nor does PP state that passengers must attentively watch safety demo.
