I wasn't able to find a review thread on this hotel even though it's been around for a little, so I figured I'd start one. This hotel is located at
W 28th and 6th Ave and is next door to the Moxy NYC Chelsea. Note that it's
not the same as the Hyatt Place New York/Chelsea, although that would be a pretty easy mistake to make for those that don't pay attention to Hyatt's market segmentation strategy.
I stayed here 3 nights on a very favorable corporate rate ($150/night for the smallest room) - for comparison, I'm seeing a minimum of $180/night booking a few months out during offseason.
Rooms
Early checkin was requested and couldn't be met (granted, I arrived at 9am), but they got me in a few hours later at 11. I was given the option of daily housekeeping, which I took.
I was booked into and given the smallest room "den" category, which is a standard 300sqft king room with microwave and fridge. There were no sofas or chairs other than the office chair. This ended up being fine for business travel as I was going solo and out most of the day, but I could see it getting pretty tight, even with two people. The hotel also features larger suites with kitchenettes and sofas — I'd go with this if you're planning on spending any time in your room.
Noise levels were low given the small number of people per floor and the windows do a pretty good job of dampening traffic noise from 6th Ave. Aside from size, my only gripe was the lack of a dresser — while there's a closet, I couldn't really unpack and ended up putting clothes on the shelves above the desk.
Building
There's a nice roof space and gym area at the top of the building, which is 20+ floors. The view is great, but I didn't hang out here much. Grab and go breakfast was still in effect and the bar was closed. The building footprint is tall and skinny, with a tiny lobby and each floor only holding 5-7 rooms.
Location
This was a big plus. The hotel is right on the edge of Chelsea and is walkable to major transit hubs including Penn Station, but is far enough away to avoid some of the problems associated with being close by — I did JFK to the hotel in an hour flat via LIRR. 28th St and 34th St stations are a few minutes' walk away which covers most of Manhattan.
Overall, it was a perfectly fine stay. Nothing too exceptional, but it got the job done, and I slept well. If coming back on my own dime, I definitely wouldn't burn category 5 points or more than $200/night in the "den" room, only the suites, but otherwise it's a good value.
