Interesting. I've never heard of such a rule and it would appear to make zero sense, so I'm a little skeptical.

The only instance I'm aware of where the operating airline's rules are relevant when booking award tickets pertain to embargos, political issues etc. (e.g. I seem to recall a case where airlines based in X were prohibited from transporting pax if their final destination was Syria or similar).
