Alternatively if I start the cancel process it says We'll reinstate your miles up to one year after the ticket issue date if your trip is eligible.

If I cancel do I get the $49 per ticket fees/taxes returned?
Phone contacts with them have been taking forever.
Does AA have flights to your original city on the original date available for sale? If so, then HUACA (can be done via Twitter).
If there are scheduled flights but fully booked, check again later for someone cancelling and contact AA to rebook.
If no scheduled flights and you don't want to travel, this can be cancelled without any penalty via Twitter.
