The standard protocol is that a Mechanic is on board all hopper flights to handle in route mechanical issues. You may get stranded if they have to wait for parts but will usually get a release to fly with a deferred maintenance report. After all the mechanic certifying the deferral will be flying on that aircraft, a pretty good guarantee of airworthiness!
