Going to need to get from PVR to Iberostar Selection Punta Mita. Choosing between renting a car and taking a taxi.

I've always driven a car in Mexico but I've always been to much safer areas there.

Found a lot of discussions about this at other places but those threads are many years old, so would like some fresh information actual in 2021.

So who recently rented a car in PVR, how safe do you think that was? Is it safe to visit the city of Puerto Vallarta before driving to the resort? How safe is the coastal part of the drive? I've been advised to take a taxi but I feel I may want to visit a couple to a few places along the route and to leave the resort to explore the outside area and I think a car would be helpful for that.

So whoever knows the safety situation there in 2021, I would appreciate hearing your thoughts on renting a car vs taking a taxi as well as how safe the city of Puerto Vallarta is these days.
