I normally don't care and just use 72,000 miles for business.
However, on an upcoming trip, my friend is in Premium Economy.(her company paid for the ticket) I want to sit with her on this flight. The choices are 35k for economy, 72k for business and 135k for Premium Economy. It makes no sense to me. I've seen this since UA introduced their own Premium Economy a few years ago. Is it because there's a LOT more award inventory in business class and little or no award inventory in Premium Economy?
As
Kacee points out, you're seeing the saver Business inventory vs. the now standard PE inventory. And, fundamentally, on UA, there are fewer PE seats vs. J.

Exactly. If your company only allows you to purchase "economy" tickets, you'll be sitting the PE.
If you don't want to spend the extra miles, recommend following
Aussienarelle 's advice.
