Kind of interesting. Back in my UA days I had countless times with 4+ segments and side by side tags. So seems this could be a tricky way to short check a bag on AA if one were so inclined.
Back in 1991 on CO, I used to check the max free bags
outside, then checked more inside, when I,was in the process of moving. They never mentioned an issue at the ticket counter
