I have done this--flown standby on red-eye with later same day ticketing on a paid fare so don't know why it wouldn't be done for reward. Sometimes they will say you will violate 4 hr connect rule if connecting. When reducing 2 flights to one non-stop, this has been no problem as Elite/Super Elite but don't know how sticky they are these days. Shouldn't really be a problem.
