You have to re-clear security in LHR when transiting. Why would you not expect to do so in the US?
I would agree that there should be a more direct way to get back airside from immigration and bag recheck. LAX has a dedicated security line for international arrivals, although technically anyone can use it if you know it exists. Connecting in DFW you're just dumped out landside and have to wander around until you find a security checkpoint.
Same with EWR. We found that accidentally because we had to visit the CBP office for an unrelated reason, and it's right outside of the "secret security line." We began using that when we knew the regular lines would be terrible and it was a quiet time of the day for international arrivals.
