I'm not sure about this... but I think I heard somewhere that you can take a different routing as long as you don't exceed the number of flight coupons issued originally.
ie. if you were ticketed YYC-YYZ-YUL-BOS, you could reticket yourself YYC-YUL-BOS or YYC-YYZ-BOS or YYC-YEG-YYZ-BOS, but not YYC-YEG-YYZ-YUL-BOS.
But again, I'm not sure -- you have to check. (Personally, I have only reduced the number of segments when rerouting on a W ticket, not increase).
