We also viewed a video on the plane offering us choices to clear immigration, using machines, but none of these were available and we had to join a long line, with only three agents being available.
When transiting through the US from an international flight, it is LAW that everyone entering must collect their checked bags at baggage claim and bring them through customs/im. This has always been the case. This goes for every airport in the US regardless of airline.
