I believe it's octopus but I get you. For me, it's no need for the cruelty. The other one that was popular in Singapore and possibly some other parts was a fish deep-fried, where the head was still alive.

Back to cazu marzu, IIRC the desired product is the frass, or excrement (purely digested sheep cheese) of the larvae/maggots, not the larvae/maggots themselves.
