Two hours before check-in now, the upgrade list still shows 7 FC seats available and 2 comfort plus, and if I do a dummy purchase I can purchase these seats,
but all still unavailable to pay for an upgrade and all still have an X.

Two days ago I was able to choose to pay for an upgrade, but assumed pricing/points would go down after check in, as so many seats available. (also was hoping to be higher on the upgrade list).

Still don't understand why they do this, not the first time I've seen it either.
You can always call DL and ask to upfare your flight, thereby paying the fare difference (with no additional fees).
