We will only automatically upgrade you to Premium Class if the same seat type you've already booked is available. So, if you've booked a Main Cabin window seat, you'll only be automatically upgraded into a Premium Class window seat; if you've booked a Main Cabin aisle seat, you'll only be automatically upgraded into a Premium Class aisle seat. Will I be upgraded into a middle seat?
If you have booked a Main Cabin aisle or window seat, and there are only middle seats available when your upgrade window arrives, you won't be automatically upgraded to a Premium Class middle seat. You will still have the option of selecting a middle seat in Premium Class (if one is available) by checking in using one of our kiosks.

Both of these are just completely opposite of my experiences. To be fair, I made 75K early this year so maybe things have changed. I'd venture to say that every time I got upgraded from my nice 17A exit row I'd be placed in a crappy middle seat in PC. Thankfully, I watch closely and could switch myself back to the exit row or (more often) just select a better PC seat.
Edit: I just totally messed up my post-quoting but think I got it right - James, sorry if I misquoted or deleted some of your post.
