I think it's dependent on the individual hotels. Having left items behind at a few large resort hotels in the past few years (not Hilton family hotels though), I am aware that there are online tools that hotels can subscribe to that provide a means of tracking lost and found and then facilitating the return to the owner (at the owner's expense).
